Drywall gypsum board producer National Gypsum Company will invest $25 million over the next half decade to upgrade existing machinery and install new equipment at part of plans to restart its Wilmington, NC plant that closed in 2009, the Charlotte, NC-based firm announced in a press release Tuesday.

The gypsum board plant in Wilmington was shuttered in response to a downturn in the housing industry during the recession, the release said. National Gypsum intends to begin hiring and training new staff for the facility within the next few months.

“We expect to have the plant operational by the end of the year,” National Gypsum’s chief executive officer Tom Nelson said in a statement. “Wilmington will allow us to better respond to customer demand as the construction industry continues to build momentum. This plant will help us grow our specialty gypsum board business which includes are successful family of PURPLE mold- and moisture-resistant products.”

Raw materials will be transported to the Wilmington plant from National Gypsum’s quarry in Halifax, NS. A new rail spur leading to the plant will also be constructed as part of the project.

In addition to the plant in North Carolina, the company operates 17 other gypsum board facilities in the U.S., according to the firm’s website.
